You + Me. Private sessions. And a feeling of relief…

written by Bari Tessler June 14, 2024

Dear friend,

One weekend many years ago, long before our 15 year old son was born, my husband and I loaded up two camping backpacks with enough supplies for 2 days and we headed off deep into the mountain wilderness of California.

You should know that I am not a camping person and I’m even less of a “hey let’s put a 45-pound backpack on and hike for 6 miles on a rocky mountain trail and then set up camp” kind of camping person.

Somehow, my husband convinced me that it would be fun.

That was, to be clear, our first and last backpack camping trip in our 24 years together.

Let’s just say that I realized on that trip that I’m much more of a “let’s find a nice place to rent with a comfy bed, running water, and some great restaurants nearby” kind of a gal.

There was, however, one moment that stuck with me from that camping trip:

The immense relief I felt when we arrived at the campsite and I slid the heavy backpack off my back and dropped it on the ground with a satisfying thud.

I felt 200 pounds lighter. I could suddenly hear all the birds chirp-chirping around me, notice all the vibrant wildflowers in every direction, and feel the warmth of the setting sun soothing my skin.

It was a full-bodied, simple joy. Do you know that kind of relief?

It’s very similar to the kind of relief that people tell me they feel during the one-on-one financial therapy sessions I do.

Sometimes all you need is to tell someone what you’ve been going through around money. Someone with experience around money issues to listen to you, support you, and gently guide you into a better way of doing your dance with money.

Sometimes that’s all it takes to get that weight off your back and hear that satisfying “thunk” as it hits the ground.

There’s still a handful of slots left for private, one-on-one financial therapy sessions with me for this round of one-on-one sessions.

And I promise, there will be no 6 mile hike on a mountain trail with a 45-pound backpack required.

One last parting thought from someone who has done private sessions with me before I go for today:

Kristen Wheeler

“I think what Bari does more than anything is un-shames us around money. It’s the combination of nuts and bolts financial knowledge and practices, with compassionate attention — not only on the numbers, but past baggage, emotions, and heart. . . . . It was the combination of rigor — and frankly love — that made this work land with me like nothing before.”
