4 therapists on a podcast reviewed my book. What could go wrong?

Dear Friend,

I hope all is well with you over there as we head into the somewhat crazy holiday shopping family time part of the year (which for many of us can bring up some money grist for the mill.)

Today, I wanted to drop by your inbox and share a fun story about a recent podcast that I wasn’t part of directly…but the podcast hosts were talking about me and my book for the whole show. (My ears were burning a little.)

Before I get to that story, my husband and I have started a new little weekly ritual-tradition where we meet on Friday night at the dinner table as the sun is going down, light the shabbat candles, and we each share a few good things that happened in the week.

It’s a simple and wonderful way to celebrate the wins we’re each having, no matter how small, in any area of life. We’re calling it the “Weekly Good Things” ritual, and I love it.

Because it would be a bit of a challenge to fit all 14,342 of you around our dinner table, I thought I’d share one of the good things from last week with you right here.

As I was scrolling Instagram last week, I noticed that I was tagged by the hosts of a podcast I’d never heard of before: Shit Your Therapist Reads. “What a fun podcast name,” I thought to myself. “Wait…they tagged me, so that must mean they all read my book and are talking about it in this episode!,” came the next thought.

The podcast hosts are a trio of marriage and family therapists who read mental health and wellness books and then review them on the show. And the topic of their latest episode? My book, The Art of Money: A Life-Changing Guide To Financial Happiness.

How could I not click on that?

Now, let me just say, it was fascinating to listen to my book being reviewed by a crew of therapists. I had no idea what they were going to say and I got to be a fly on the wall as smart therapists were talking about my book, what they liked, what they were learning, what was missing, and if they would recommend it to their clients.

The show hosts bring on guests to recommend a book for the hosts to read. And for this episode they brought on a financial therapist who recommended my book as a great introduction to the main financial therapy concepts and they discussed the growing field of financial therapy. (This therapist mentioned that she recommends my book to all of her clients who have any kind of money issues coming up.)

During the show, I was referred to as both the “godmother” of financial therapy (because I was the first person to talk about and teach this “financial therapy” thing to a large audience way back in 2001), and was also referred to as a little “woo woo.”

As the show went on, I was relieved to hear that they all felt it’s a great book to read. They loved how my book and approach plants new seeds for their own relationship to money, and they all wanted to give copies of it to their clients.

Obviously, I wouldn’t be writing a whole letter to you about this podcast episode if they hated my book, although I have been known to share some of my worst book reviews.

Some of them are so far off that they’re funny to me. For example, one recent negative review on Good reads says, “This author acts like everyone has big and challenging emotions around money.” Lol.

I mean, come on, I’m a therapist…a financial therapist…so yeah, this is what people come to me to talk about and get support with, both in my one-on-one private sessions and in my online group programs.

If you’d like to have a listen to 4 licensed therapists review and pick apart my book and approach, you can listen to the episode right here.

I wish you well on your journey with money this week, whatever that entails for you
