27 ways to make a Money Date your own 1. Light a 27 ways to make a Money Date your own

1. Light a candle to open the space as you start — and set an intention. Blow it out when you’ve finished your Money Date.

2. Put your Money Date on the calendar! Who says you can’t schedule it — and even look forward to it?

3. Play some favorite music to get you in the mood. Whether it’s Big Band, Bach, or Beyonce, play something that helps you feel like YOU.

4. Clear off your desk and make a clean, calm space. A clear desk can help clear the mind.

5. Start with an intention. Articulate what your hopes and priorities are for this time. “For the next hour, I want to be really kind to myself. Whenever I catch myself getting anxious, I want to remember I’m learning and it’s OK that I don’t know everything — and feel proud of myself for showing.

6. Upgrade your bookkeeping system. I can’t tell you how many people are still using a spreadsheet someone made them years ago. Give yourself an upgrade! Spend a little time investigating YNAB, Money Grit, QuickBooks, and other tracking systems until you find one that feels “good enough” for you to learn.

7. Speaking of learning a bookkeeping system — do it! Don’t just download it and expect yourself to know how to use it. Spend a little time with a video tutorial, or hire a bookkeeping trainer to show you the ropes.

8. Reconsider your spending categories. Maybe you want a whole “self-care” category, for acupuncture and massage and your gym membership? Or maybe you’re craving more friendship and want to set aside funds for dinners and movies out with friends?

9. Decide how you want to show up in a money-related conversation. Even if you’re calling your credit card company to dispute a charge, you can decide you want to be warm and friendly to voice on the other end.

10. Move your body! Take a dance break … or do some gentle yoga or go for a walk.

11. Invite a friend. You might meet at a coffeeshop, catch up for a few minutes, and then each get to work on money stuff for an hour — and debrief afterwards. (Choose a very trusted friend!)

Cheers to 10 years of Money Memoirs Ten years ago Cheers to 10 years of Money Memoirs

Ten years ago, I sent an invitation out into the world: join me and 33 brave souls for a month of money truth-telling, one money story at a time.

I called this experiment in collective money mindfulness “Money Memoirs.”

Since 2013, this intimate interview series has illuminated the money stories of folks from around the world and all walks of life.

In this interview mini-series, I talked to folks from all different backgrounds and walks of life — and asked them to share real stories about money. The good, the hard, and the triumphant.

Because we ALL have money wisdom and gems to share. And sometimes, just hearing someone open up lets our own healing begin.

What I couldn’t know then was that this whole-hearted exploration of our relationships with money would continue to unfold, evolve, and inspire over the next decade.

To bring our money stories out of the shadows and into the light.

To enrich and connect this dear community.

To bring more depth and intimacy to our money relationships than ever before.

To let you know that you are never alone in the ebbs and flows of this life and money journey.

Telling our money stories is one simple yet profoundly powerful way we can work together to change the greater narrative around wealth and money and worth.

The beauty of this truth is that sharing our money stories brings healing to ourselves, our closest relationships, our communities, and the world around us.

Because in sharing and witnessing our money stories, we are carving out space for more voices to be heard and valued, for more experiences to be recognized and honored.

With this vulnerable, meaningful work, we are forging a more compassionate future together.

It is my deep honor to be the facilitator of this incredible and inspiring collection of money stories.

As we mark this ten-year anniversary, I invite you to celebrate with me and enjoy the bravery these Money Memoirs have to offer us all.
